Ngomo Inauguration

The Community of Ngomo, located 70km North-west of Yaounde celebrated the Inauguration of their new Integrated Health Centre on the 20th of June, 2006.  The community of 5400 have been in need of a basic health clinic for many years.  Now the community has a new health clinic and additionally have access to safe drinking water as they have their own water pump.

The 20 Million FCFA Health Project was implemented by IRESCO and funded by the British High Commission (BHC).  The project was completed in just over 8 months and IRESCO received complimentary evaluations from the BHC throughout the project life cycle.  The special guest speakers that attended the inauguration included the Co-ordinator of IRESCO, the British High Commissioner, the Minister of Public Health and the Mayor.

The Co-ordinator of IRESCO stated in his speech that IRESCO would continue to be committed to projects like Ngomo, striving to improve standard of living for Cameroonians.  The High Commissioner told the community that "the UK Government is working hard to strengthen the international effort to combat global health problems, especially those in developing countries".  The Minister of Health Urbain Olanguena Awono promised the people that government would continue to develop the health centre.  He hoped to see it become a specialised centre for the handling of emergency cases given its proximity to a major highway.  To show the government’s interest he presented the health centre with a donation of essential drugs, a refrigerator and a motorbike.  The local chief and the people of Ngomo were full of thanks and praise for the British High Commission and IRESCO and celebrated in song and dance at the Inauguration.  The local community offered hand made gifts and a traditional broom as a symbol of power to the High Commissioner.

The High Commissioner also told the local community of one of the UK’s long term goals is development, "…the British High Commission in Cameroon is participating actively in these efforts through the administration of its Community Projects Fund".
