Behavioural Communication Change
Background The department ultimately aims to promote a healthier lifestyle by gathering information, developing the appropriate education and manages an effective communication strategy. Information – Education – Communication IEC.
Brief History In 1996, Behavioural Communication Change (BCC) was first launched in Nkongsamba, a small town north of Douala. This was an education campaign concentrated on sexual health, specifically HIV/AIDS and family planning. Pier education was used as the educational tool to disseminate this information to the youth of the community. Tulane University, Louisiana provided technical support and Sante Familiale Prevention du Sida funded this one year project.
The success of this project allowed IRESCO to extend its influence to the other regions of Cameroon and initiate further projects to promote sexual health education among the youth. BCC also diversified into non-sexually transmitted disease education campaigning. Other creative educational techniques/tools were developed such as magazines, leaflets, comic strips, posters, school/youth club presentations, video clubs and radio programmes throughout the provinces.
The Department supervises all education campaign activities. This involves evaluation, education management reporting and effective public relations.
Publications Editing
Publications like Among Youths and Entre nous Jeunes (ENJ) produced by IRESCO, supported by Donors, presently Global Funds, are not just only concerned with health related issues. They also include subjects like:
Previous studies have shown that this creative mixture appeals to the younger generation. Confidence, another youth magazine is aimed at helping young people deal with their problematic secrets. Juniors, a magazine for 8-14 year olds was recently launched to educate the younger generation on a variety of issues in a modern African society. This magazine is another example of IRESCO working with the Ministry of Basic Education to educate the youth of Cameroon.
IRESCO has two teams that work on publications and also include University Students Internships for those reading Journalism. Other science/art students, either part-time or full-time also contribute to the organisation. This dynamic exchange allows IRESCO to keep in touch with the youth of today. Communication Management This part of the organisation is responsible for relaying information concerning IRESCO to the public. These education campaigns are created, organised and managed by IRESCO. These are via Radio programmes and adverts, creating youth clubs to discuss and be informed of today’s current affairs and distribution of publications.
Sales, Advertising & Marketing This office is responsible for the final presentation of all IRESCO documentation performed principally by the organisations graphic designer. Other functions include the overarching sales strategy, sales revenue, recruitment of salespersons throughout the country and contact with the distributors. The printing works are kept up to date with the organisations needs concerning current and future requirements on the numerous publications produced. |
